Пациентите с рак, получаващи лъчетерапия, често изпитват умора и нарушено качество на живот (QOL). Смята се, че много странични ефекти на лъчетерапията са свързани с повишен оксидативен стрес и възпаление поради генерирането на реактивни кислородни видове по време на лъчетерапията. Водородът може да се прилага като терапевтичен медицински газ, има антиоксидантни свойства и намалява възпалението в тъканите. Това проучване изследва дали лечението с водород под формата на вода, допълнена с водород, подобрява QOL при пациенти, получаващи лъчетерапия. Проведено е рандомизирано, плацебо контролирано проучване за оценка на ефектите от пиенето на богата на водород вода върху 49 пациенти, получаващи лъчетерапия за злокачествени чернодробни тумори. Водата, богата на водород, се получава чрез поставяне на метална магнезиева пръчка в питейна вода (крайна концентрация на водород; 0,55 ~ 0,65 mM). Корейската версия на инструмента QLQ-C30 на Европейската организация за изследване и лечение на рака е използвана за оценка на глобалното здравословно състояние и QOL. Бяха оценени концентрацията на производни на реактивни окислителни метаболити и биологичната антиоксидантна сила в периферната кръв. Консумацията на богата на водород вода в продължение на 6 седмици намалява реактивните кислородни метаболити в кръвта и поддържа потенциала за окисляване на кръвта.
Резултатите от QOL по време на лъчетерапия са значително подобрени при пациенти, лекувани с богата на водород вода в сравнение с пациентите, получаващи плацебо вода. Няма разлика в туморния отговор на лъчетерапията между двете групи. Ежедневната консумация на богата на водород вода е потенциално нова терапевтична стратегия за подобряване на QOL след излагане на радиация.
