The energy transition calls for a transformation that will leave no sector untouched. The transition requires renewable power to expand rapidly along with supporting infrastructure: grid-scale batteries, electrolyzers, EV chargers, and more.<\/p>\n<p>This is already stoking\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/the-role-of-critical-minerals-in-clean-energy-transitions\/executive-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">demand for certain metals<\/a>, often referred to as critical minerals or energy transition metals. Platinum, among the rarest of these, is invaluable in making electrolyzers and fuel cells cost competitive. But if supply \u2013 currently extremely limited \u2013 cannot be increased to meet demand, it could pose a challenge to the transition.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unlocking clean hydrogen<\/h2>\n<p>Platinum\u2019s role in the energy transition could lie in making clean hydrogen technologies commercially viable.<\/p>\n<p>Clean hydrogen can be made from decarbonized gas or manufactured using an electrolyzer powered by renewables, to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. There are various types of electrolyzer on the market, but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/global-hydrogen-review-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to the IEA<\/a>,\u00a0 hydrogen project developers are increasingly favoring proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis, which is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.h2bulletin.com\/platinum-hydrogen-economy-wpic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more efficient than alternatives such as alkaline electrolysis<\/a>. Many PEM electrolyzers use platinum to make\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/technology.matthey.com\/article\/57\/4\/259-271\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">extremely high-performance<\/a>\u00a0catalysts.<\/p>\n<p>Hydrogen has the potential to displace carbon-intensive fuels, transforming industries that are difficult to decarbonize, including steelmaking and heavy-duty transport. Clean hydrogen remains comparatively expensive, however. When made from renewables, the cost is estimated at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/gx\/en\/industries\/energy-utilities-resources\/future-energy\/green-hydrogen-cost.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u20ac3 to \u20ac8\/kg compared with \u20ac1 to \u20ac2\/kg for fossil fuel-derived hydrogen.<\/a>\u00a0Today, it only makes up\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/global-hydrogen-review-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a sliver of the overall hydrogen market (0.04 percent in 2021)<\/a>. The efficiency and longevity of platinum-based PEM electrolyzers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmegroup.com\/articles\/2022\/platinum-the-critical-mineral-for-energy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">could therefore play an important part<\/a>\u00a0in pushing down the cost of clean hydrogen.<\/p>\n<p>But this precious metal will be more useful in the energy transition in more ways than one. Platinum \u2013 already used to reduce transport emissions with catalytic converters in cars \u2013 is also found in PEM fuel cells. These operate like PEM electrolyzers in reverse to combine hydrogen and oxygen, also using platinum as a catalyst.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A precious metal<\/h2>\n<p>Demand for platinum remains modest, although this is likely to change as pressure to decarbonize mounts.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmegroup.com\/articles\/2022\/platinum-the-critical-mineral-for-energy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research suggests<\/a>\u00a0that platinum will be in strong demand, with platinum-based PEM technologies alone having the potential to deliver 11 percent of global CO2 emissions reductions required by the Paris Agreement by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>The US, EU, and China have all recognized platinum as strategically important for the energy transition and have policies to stimulate demand. In the US, for instance, the Inflation Reduction Act aims to accelerate clean hydrogen production and fuel cell EV adoption and includes a generous tax incentive for low-carbon hydrogen. Meanwhile, the EU\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/IP_22_3131\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">REPowerEU<\/a>\u00a0effort aims to expand clean hydrogen capacity to 80GW by 2030 (doubling its previous target).\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmegroup.com\/articles\/2022\/platinum-the-critical-mineral-for-energy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to the World Platinum Investment Council<\/a>, this global push could make clean hydrogen production the largest source of platinum demand by 2040, accounting for as much as 35 percent of demand.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scarce supplies<\/h2>\n<p>Today\u2019s supplies of platinum are too meagre to meet ambitious climate targets.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irena.org\/publications\/2022\/Jan\/Geopolitics-of-the-Energy-Transformation-Hydrogen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The International Renewable Energy Agency estimates<\/a>\u00a0current supplies will allow for annual PEM electrolyzer manufacturing capacity of just 3-7.5GW. This is not nearly enough to reach the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/globuc.com\/news\/green-hydrogen-project-pipeline-hits-134gw-by-2030-but-six-times-more-needed-to-be-on-track-for-net-zero-iea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IEA\u2019s proposed minimum total installed capacity of 134GW by 2030<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 and there is no sign so far that supply might expand to meet projected demand.<\/p>\n<p>Supply-demand gaps are a larger problem affecting all energy transition metals, the extraction of which have a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41893-022-00994-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">disproportionate impact on some of the world\u2019s poorest people<\/a>. The situation is especially serious for platinum, however, which is sourced from a very small number of countries \u2013 South Africa alone accounts for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deutsche-rohstoffagentur.de\/DERA\/DE\/Downloads\/DERA%2520Themenheft-01-22.pdf?__blob%20=publicationFile&amp;v%20=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than 70 percent of global platinum supplies<\/a>, and the country\u2019s mining industry is facing ongoing challenges, from frequent strikes to disputes over environmental impacts.<\/p>\n<p>Given limited and inelastic supply chains, mounting demand for platinum is likely to cause price volatility in the coming years. At stake is the commercial viability of clean hydrogen and fuel cells, while R&amp;D into other green technologies could be impeded. This is to say nothing of the potential geopolitical conflict that could emerge from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irena.org\/-\/media\/files\/irena\/agency\/publication\/2019\/jan\/global_commission_geopolitics_new_world_2019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the rush to secure platinum and other critical minerals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Platinum-based PEM technology could be a powerful tool in the energy transition, making clean hydrogen and fuel cells more competitive.
