SE-listed\u00a0energy<\/a>\u00a0group Sasol reports that it produced its first green hydrogen in Sasolburg in June, during the commissioning phase of a\u00a0project<\/a>\u00a0to repurpose an operational electrolyser to use renewable electricity to split\u00a0water<\/a>\u00a0into hydrogen and oxygen.<\/p>\n

Sasol has set aside R350-million for the pilot Free State\u00a0project<\/a>, which is expected to produce up to 5 t of green hydrogen daily.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n
\"\"CEO\u00a0Fleetwood Grobler<\/strong>\u00a0reports that the first green hydrogen was produced using electricity from a 3 MW\u00a0solar<\/a>\u00a0photovoltaic facility built in Sasolburg.<\/div>\n

<\/ins><\/div>\n

However, consistent production is anticipated only in early 2024 once the 69 MW Msenge Emoyeni Wind Farm, in the Eastern Cape, begins supplying the facility.<\/p>\n

\"\"\u201cOnce operational, the Msenge wind farm together with the Sasolburg\u00a0solar<\/a>\u00a0farm will provide sufficient renewable\u00a0power<\/a>\u00a0to commercialise green hydrogen in South\u00a0Africa<\/a>.<\/div>\n

<\/ins><\/div>\n

\u201cThis is a huge step forward in the\u00a0energy<\/a>\u00a0transition, not just for Sasol but also for South\u00a0Africa<\/a>,\u201d Grobler said during a presentation of the group\u2019s 2023 results.<\/p>\n

The green hydrogen produced in Sasolburg will be used in mobility applications and Grobler told\u00a0Engineering<\/a>\u00a0News<\/em>\u00a0in an interview that formal partnership announcements would be made later in the year.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a demand for green hydrogen to decarbonise the\u00a0mining<\/a>\u00a0industry, and in other mobility applications.\u201d<\/p>\n

Separately, Sasol\u2019s hydrogen-based\u00a0sustainable<\/a>\u00a0aviation<\/a>\u00a0fuel (SAF) HySHiFT joint venture in Secunda, Mpumalanga, which is being pursued in partnership with Linde, ENERGTRAG and Hydregen, has been short-listed to bid for an offtake agreement under Germany\u2019s H2Global platform.<\/p>\n

Through H2Global, long-term purchase agreements are extended to\u00a0projects<\/a>\u00a0outside of Germany that offer competitively priced green-hydrogen derivatives, such as ammonia, methanol and SAF. The\u00a0products<\/a>\u00a0are then sold, under short-term contracts, to European consumers, with public funding used to compensate for any difference in pricing.<\/p>\n

Sasol\u00a0energy<\/a>\u00a0business<\/a>\u00a0VP Priscillah Mabelane<\/strong>\u00a0indicated that the bid should be submitted before the end of the calendar year.<\/p>\n

Mabelane also reported that a master plan had been finalised and handed over for a mega-hydrogen\u00a0project<\/a>\u00a0in the Northern Cape and Sasol was closely monitoring progress on the development of the new port in Boegoebaai, which is seen as key to further progress.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
