Loop Energy has announced it will supply fuel cell systems to be used in a hydrogen-electric fire truck at a Spanish airport.
The new fire truck platform has been established by an unnamed, specialty vehicle OEM with a global operating presence in 14 countries.
Loop Energy will fit the fire truck with two of its T505 fuel cell systems, with the first phase seeing a roll out of the vehicles into operation at an airport, before the OEM scales production for use in other locations. Production is expected to begin Q4 2023.
Luigi Fusi, Loop Energy Vice President of Sales and Business Development EMEAR, said, “Special-purpose vehicles like fire trucks have their unique challenges when it comes to electrification.
“Fuel efficiency and storage capacity play a critical role in determining range of the vehicle and its ability to operate longer without the need to refuel, which are critical as these vehicles are designed to service many mission-critical situations.”
This announcement ensures Loop Energy introduction into the market of special-purpose vehicles, presenting a significant opportunity for electrification through hydrogen fuel cells. Loop Energy’s technology was selected due to its high efficiency when compared to competitive products, a key difference of the eFlow™ proprietary technology.
Last year (2022), Loop Energy unveiled its ‘next-generation’ fuel cell solutions in order to see the acceleration of hydrogen-powered medium to heavy duty vehicles being deployed.
